Fossil collecting in the Silica Shale of Lucas County, Ohio May 10, 2006 Page 1

After a morning of geocaching with my friend Brittany from The
University of Toledo we decided to go collecting at the quarry
in Sylvania, Ohio. We have been there many times before but
this time we had a plan! We were hunting trilobites! After
getting information from our professor and some books on the
area we had a good idea where to look. The Silica Shale is from
the middle Devonian period (~370 - 400 MY) and is very well
known for its phacops rana trilobites. Along with the trilobites
there are numerous other Devonian age marine fossils. They
are super easy to collect because they easily weather out of the
matrix are lying around on the surface. After a couple hours of
looking this is what I found!
