Description:
Abstract:
This is a shapefile of past glacial lake strandlines for northwest Ohio. As the glacier retreated from the area, water collected in front of the glacier in the Lake Erie basin forming numerous glacial lakes, each depositing their own beach ridges as the lake was at a certain elevation. The sand for the ridges came from the outwash of the glacier which was carried down to northwest Ohio by longshore currents. The Oak Openings study area is mostly covered by this sand. The different lake levels were caused by the glacier melting back and opening new lower outlets causing the lake to drop in water level. During readvances of the ice sheet the outlet that was in use would be covered by ice and the lake level would rise finding an outlet higher in elevation. This rise in lake level would submerge beaches made during a previous stage smoothing them out. In the Oak Openings study area there are strandlines, former beach ridges, of each of the major Pleistocene lake beaches of the Erie basin as shown by this shapefile.
Purpose:
The purpose of this shapefile is to give an understanding of the glacial past of the Oak Openings study area. The Oak Openings sand ridges are a factor of this glacial past.
